How we find and repair a gas leak
- Tightness test: We connect a pressure gauge at the gas meter and test the whole installation. If the pressure drops, we know gas is escaping somewhere.
- Trace the leak: We check each section of pipework, every joint and each appliance connection with an electronic gas detector and leak detection fluid until we find the source.
- Repair and retest: We repair or replace the faulty section, test again to prove the installation is gas tight, then restore the supply and check your appliances.
What to do if you smell gas
Leave the property straight away, opening doors and windows as you go if it is safe to do so. Do not use light switches, plugs or doorbells, and do not smoke or light a flame. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can reach it easily, then call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside. They will make the supply safe. You will then need a Gas Safe registered engineer to find and repair the leak, and that is where we come in.
Carbon monoxide has no smell at all, so fit a carbon monoxide alarm too.
